#RightToFood: Advancing Food Security Across Communities in Nigeria

Across Nigeria this year, the call for improved food security grew louder and GIFSEP, in partnership with Oxfam, helped ensure it was impossible to ignore. Through the #RightToFood campaign, we worked shoulder to shoulder with communities, journalists, civil society, and policymakers to transform a simple but powerful idea into a national conversation: food is not a privilege; it is a right.

The year began with widespread awareness efforts to help Nigerians understand the newly enacted Right to Food Act. From community gatherings to media engagements, we brought the provisions of the Act into everyday conversations, making it more accessible to farmers, families, and decision-makers. Copies of the Act were shared across communities and institutions, fueling a growing movement of citizens demanding that the government translate the law into real, tangible protections against hunger.

In Abuja, our National Stakeholders Dialogue became a key moment for reflection and commitment. Farmers’ groups, government agencies, and development partners sat side by side to discuss how Nigeria’s agricultural investments can truly serve smallholder farmers, the backbone of our food system. Their stories, challenges, and aspirations grounded the dialogue in the realities that policy must address.

Recognizing the media’s critical role in shaping public understanding, GIFSEP convened a workshop for journalists in Abuja, deepening their knowledge of the Act and equipping them to report on food rights with accuracy and urgency. Soon after, learning sessions with civil society organizations in Jos and Lagos helped expand this momentum across regions. In each city, local CSOs connected the national conversation to sub-national realities, pushing state governments to adopt and implement the Act in ways that reflect their communities’ unique contexts.

What began as awareness had evolved into a nationwide push for accountability, stronger policies, and a more equitable food system. The #RightToFood campaign not only strengthened public understanding, it empowered communities to claim their rights and demand action from those responsible for safeguarding them.

GIFSEP remains committed to advancing a Nigeria where every household is food-secure, every farmer has the support they need, and every voice is heard in the fight for a just and resilient food system.
