Food is a basic necessity of life and serves as the foundation for survival, transcending cultural, tribal, ethnic, and religious barriers. Despite Nigeria’s rich agricultural resources, millions of Nigerians suffer from hunger, malnutrition, and severe food insecurity. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), over 20 million Nigerians are classified as severely food insecure. Challenges such as poverty, inequality, conflict, displacement, poor infrastructure, and climate change have exacerbated the issue of food insecurity.
Between 2020 and 2022, an average of 21.3 percent of the population in Nigeria experienced hunger. Many individuals faced severe food insecurity, often going entire days without food due to a lack of money or resources. In recent years, the prevalence of severe food insecurity in Nigeria has been on the rise, driven by increasing food demand alongside a rapidly growing population.
Recognizing the urgent need to address growing food insecurity in Nigeria, the Nigerian government passed the Right to Food Act in 2023. This act, known as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) (No. 34) Act, is a significant piece of legislation aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. The Right to Food Act is not only focused on alleviating hunger but also on tackling its root causes, including poverty, inequality, and systemic barriers to food access. The act mandates the government to align its policies with the right to food. Furthermore, the right to food can be derived from domestic laws and human rights treaty obligations.
GIFSEP is excited to announce its partnership with Oxfam in Nigeria, aimed at holding government officials accountable for their roles in ensuring food security. This important collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Together, we aim to strengthen our efforts in promoting the Right to Food Act, food sovereignty, and sustainable agriculture.
