Promoting Tree Planting: GIFSEP and CJID Partner to Educate and Engage Youth in Abuja

Raising awareness about the importance of planting trees is most effectively achieved through demonstration and practice. With this in mind, the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), in partnership with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), carried out a tree planting campaign in commemoration of the Forest Day 2024 at Junior Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, on March 21, 2024. This initiative aimed to show how innovative solutions can contribute to reforestation efforts, ecosystem restoration, and mitigating the impact of climate change.

The campaign involved educating staff and students of the school about the economic and environmental importance of trees. The young participants learned how trees play a crucial role in protecting and preserving our forests, as well as their significance in combating climate change. By involving students directly in tree planting activities, the campaign fostered a hands-on understanding of environmental stewardship and the practical steps they can take to contribute to a healthier planet.

Engaging the younger generation in mitigation efforts provides a critical opportunity to cultivate future adults who care deeply about the environment. By fostering a sense of environmental stewardship in today’s youth, we can help them transform our damaged planet into a better, more sustainable world.
