GIFSEP and Policy Centre for the New South, Morocco powers IDPs camp in Maiduguri

As part of our Solar for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) initiative, Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) with support from the Policy Centre for the New South, Morroco, lights up additional 100 IDPs households in Maiduguri-Borno State.

The Solar for IDPs camp is an initiative of GIFSEP which commenced in the year 2018. It has so far powered about 500 households in IDPs camps in Maiduguri, Borno State. The initiative is designed to provide clean energy access to internally displaced persons camps across Nigeria. It also involves the training of selected IDPs on the installation and maintenance of simple solar systems.

Official Commissioning of Solar for IDPs camp

The insurgency in North East Nigeria, has displaced about 2 million people from their ancestral homes whom now take shelter in IDPs camps across the country.  However, many of these IDPs camps do not have access to electricity thereby living the vulnerable group of people in darkness. It is in the light of these, that GIFSEP came up with the solar for IDPs camp initiative in 2018.

How it Works: GIFSEP selects an IDP camp, forms an implementation committee with all the stakeholders (Camp Management, beneficiaries and a Staff of GIFSEP). The beneficiaries are selected based on criteria which include: The most vulnerable people, women, widows, households with students etc. The beneficiaries are trained on installation and maintenance.
