Building Resilience – GIFSEP enhances adaptation planning in Benue State through the climate risk register

Climate change is dramatically reshaping the lives of communities in Nigeria, in Benue State, the story is no different. Situated in the North Central zone of Nigeria, Benue State spans 34,059 square kilometres and is renowned as the “food basket of the Nation” due to its impressive food production. This underscores its status as an agrarian state, where the majority of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. However, the reliance on natural resources such as land and rainfall are posing formidable challenges as these resources are being significantly impacted by climate change.

Communities across Africa are grappling with the escalating challenges posed by climate risks. In response to this pressing issue, GIFSEP, through the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) project has been at the forefront of equipping communities and Local Government Areas with the necessary skills to develop a climate risk register for effective adaptation planning. The Climate Risk Register (CRR) process has actively engaged with diverse groups, including youth, women, men, and Persons with Disabilities, in all 23 Local Government areas of Benue State. From Zaki Biam in Ukum LGA to Owukpa in Ogbadigbo LGA and from Ayom in Guma LGA to Mbagbera in Vandeikya LGA, we have meticulously assessed and identified climate risks, subsequently establishing a robust community early warning system through the climate change risk register.

The impact of our efforts is evident in the smiles of the communities in Benue State, as they are now better equipped to confront and adapt to climate change disasters while also enhancing their resilience and livelihood. In the face of the daunting challenges brought on by the climate crisis, GIFSEP continues to shine brightly as a source of hope for frontline communities, empowering them to embrace the opportunities that arise during these trying times.
