AFRICA DAY 2025: Youth Lead the Call to REpower Africa

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the vibrant rhythms of African culture echoed through Millennium Park, Abuja, as GIFSEP, in collaboration with 350Africa and AfrikaVuka, hosted a powerful Africa Day celebration focused on Youth, Culture, and the Call to REpower Africa. The event brought together students, teachers, educational stakeholders and community members to celebrate African unity while spotlighting a critical issue; the urgent need for a just transition to renewable energy across Nigeria and the African continent.

This year’s theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparation,” went beyond cultural celebration. It called for restorative justice, recognizing the historical exploitation of African people and land, and advocating for climate justice, equitable energy access, and inclusive policy reform that empowers communities.

Students from across multiple schools dazzled the crowd with cultural performances, artistic displays, and exhibitions that proudly showcased African heritage in the Nigerian context. These creative expressions served not only as entertainment but also as powerful tools for climate education and energy advocacy.

Through engaging activities and discussions, the event; raised awareness on the connection between energy justice and African liberation, built youth capacity on renewable energy and climate solutions; fostered collaboration among schools, educators, and communities; amplified the REpower Africa movement, a united push for a just, sustainable energy  future.

Africa Day 2025 was more than a cultural event, it was a movement to educate, energize, and empower the next generation of African climate leaders.
