Beyond Politics as Usual: Putting Climate Action at the Heart of Nigeria’s Elections

The Vote4Climate 2027 Campaign has officially been launched on World Environment Day 2026, marking the beginning of a nationwide movement to ensure climate action becomes a defining issue in Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections.

Building on the success of the #Vote4Climate campaign ahead of the 2023 elections, the renewed campaign seeks to secure stronger commitments from political parties and candidates on climate action, renewable energy, food security, environmental protection, public health, and sustainable development.

The timing of the launch is significant. This year’s World Environment Day, with its focus on climate action, provides the perfect platform to begin engaging Nigerians on the critical role elections play in shaping the country’s environmental and economic future.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Michael David, the Executive Director of GIFSEP and the convener of #Vote4ClimateNG, called on Nigerians to move beyond politics based on ethnicity, religion, zoning, and short-term incentives (“stomach infrastructure”) and instead demand practical solutions to the challenges affecting their daily lives.

“The time has come to interrogate candidates on the issues that will determine the future of Nigeria.”

The campaign urges voters to ask every candidate important questions about climate adaptation, clean energy, food security, environmental governance, green jobs, pollution control, and protecting vulnerable communities from climate impacts.

Dr. David further reiterated that climate change affects everyone. He said, “Every Nigerian is a green voter. If you breathe air, drink water, eat food, depend on rainfall, use energy, care about your health, or desire a secure future for your children, then you are a green voter.”

The Vote4Climate 2027 Campaign also challenges journalists, civil society organisations, young people, and community leaders to hold candidates accountable by demanding clear, costed, and credible plans for climate resilience and sustainable development.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the campaign reminds citizens that every vote is an opportunity to choose a future that prioritises people, planet, and prosperity.

The message is simple: the future is on the ballot. Vote for climate. Vote for clean energy. Vote for food security. Vote for a sustainable Nigeria.
