In late January 2026, GIFSEP marked more than a routine transition, it signaled the beginning of a defining chapter. As the new Board convened for its inaugural meeting, the focus was clear: to position the organisation for a future that demands resilience, clarity, and bold leadership.
We are operating in a development landscape shaped by tightening funding, increasing urgency, and rising expectations for transparency. Against this backdrop, the Board gathering became a decisive moment; one that blended strong governance, sharper programmatic focus, and the unveiling of a strategic vision that will guide GIFSEP over the next five years.

The meeting crystallised four non-negotiable priorities: compliance, financial stewardship, safeguarding, and strategic direction. These were not framed as abstract ideals, but as practical commitments that will shape how GIFSEP operates internally and engages externally. Compliance discussions emphasised the need for stronger reporting systems and closer alignment with evolving regulatory frameworks, while financial stewardship took centre stage through a renewed commitment to discipline and transparency.
Safeguarding was approached as a shared responsibility that extends beyond internal policies to partners and third parties, reinforcing accountability across every layer of implementation. At the same time, the focus on strategic direction underscored the importance of clarity, ensuring that every action taken aligns with a coherent and forward looking organisational vision. Together, these priorities signal a shift from intention to execution, from structure to impact.
A defining highlight of the meeting was the presentation and approval of GIFSEP’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan. Anchored on five core pillars: Food Systems and Humanitarian Action, Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction, Clean Energy Access and Energy Justice, Disability Inclusive Development, and Advocacy and Policy influencing; the plan offers a bold and integrated roadmap for the future. At its core is a simple but powerful understanding: today’s challenges are interconnected, and meaningful solutions must be as well. Food insecurity is inseparable from climate pressures, energy access shapes livelihoods and opportunity, inclusion must be intentional rather than incidental, and sustainable change requires both action on the ground and influence at the policy level.
Through the Food Systems and Humanitarian Action pillar, GIFSEP positions itself to address both immediate needs and long-term resilience, linking emergency response with sustainable agricultural practices. Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction is elevated as a central focus, reflecting the urgency of environmental challenges and the need for community-driven responses to climate shocks. By prioritising Clean Energy Access and Energy Justice, GIFSEP signals a strategic commitment to renewable solutions that advance both development and environmental sustainability.
Equally significant is the explicit inclusion of Disability Inclusive Development as a core pillar, embedding inclusion into programme design and delivery rather than treating it as an afterthought. Advocacy and Policy Influencing ties these priorities together, serving as the bridge between grassroots realities and systemic change by amplifying community voices and shaping policies that matter.

Beyond strategy, the Board also turned its attention to the operational foundations that will sustain GIFSEP’s growth. The approval of key policies; including safeguarding, procurement, financial management, and anti-corruption frameworks, establishes a strong governance backbone for the organisation. Staffing and organisational structure were reviewed with a focus on transparency and efficiency, alongside forward looking recommendations such as outsourcing select roles and introducing service bonds for trained staff. These measures reflect a deliberate effort to balance capacity building with long term sustainability.
What stood out across the two days was the Board’s willingness to engage deeply, not only with high-level strategy but with the operational detail required to bring it to life. There was a palpable sense of an institution in transition, moving from founder driven momentum to more structured, governance led growth. In doing so, the Board has not only set a direction but clarified roles, strengthened systems, and endorsed a strategy that reflects both ambition and realism.
The inaugural Board meeting was not just about setting direction, it was about setting intent. With a clear strategy, strengthened governance, and a renewed sense of purpose, GIFSEP is poised to navigate complexity and drive meaningful change where it matters most. The next five years are not just a timeline, they are an opportunity. And GIFSEP is ready to meet it.
