GIFSEP at 10: Partnerships Powering Our Journey

GIFSEP’s success story over the past decade is one of collaboration and shared purpose. Our progress has been fueled by strong partnerships with over 30 local and international organisations and governmental bodies. These partnerships have enabled the implementation of more than 50 transformative projects and initiatives advancing renewable energy, food security, climate advocacy, and environmental education, bridging policy with grassroots action and turning community aspirations into measurable impact.

Our Thematic Footprint

Over the past decade, GIFSEP’s work has cut across key thematic areas designed to strengthen resilience, advance renewable energy, and empower communities toward climate justice.

 1. Building Climate Resilience

GIFSEP has supported vulnerable communities to understand, prepare for, and respond to climate risks through participatory tools and advocacy.

Key initiatives include:

  • Participatory Climate Change Vulnerability Mapping (PCCVM): Conducted across 727 communities in 104 LGAs across seven northern states, producing vulnerability maps and community risk data.
  • Community Climate Risk Registers: Supported 117 communities in Adamawa, Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States to develop their own registers as early warning systems.
  • National Climate Lobby Day: A flagship citizen-led advocacy event mobilizing youth and communities to engage policymakers on climate action.
  • #Vote4Climate Campaign: Reached 10+ million Nigerians to integrate climate issues into election conversations and governance priorities.

 2. Expanding Renewable Energy Access

GIFSEP promotes sustainable and affordable clean energy solutions for households and communities in Nigeria.

Key initiatives include:

  • Solar4IDP Camp: Installed solar systems for 350+ displaced households in Borno and Benue States.
  • Solar for Communities: Delivered solar power to 200+ households in Benue, Kogi, and Rivers States affected by fossil fuel extraction, which includes Solar4Ogoniland
  • Clean Cookstoves Distribution: Supported 400 households with eco-friendly stoves, reducing carbon emissions and indoor air pollution.

 3. Expanding Green Spaces & Environmental Education

From tree planting to eco-clubs, GIFSEP has worked to restore degraded lands and nurture environmental consciousness among young people.

Key initiatives include:

  • Trees for Schools Initiative: Distributed 2,500 economic trees to 64 schools in Abuja for nutrition and carbon sequestration.
  • Eco-Clubs in Schools: Established 60+ environmental clubs across FCT schools, engaging students in climate education and greening activities.
  • Arts for Climate Competition: Annual art contest giving students a platform to communicate climate action through creativity.

 4. Improving Food Systems & Livelihoods

Strengthening food security remains central to GIFSEP’s mission through sustainable agriculture and inclusion.

Key initiatives include:

  • Urban Farming Initiative: Supports urban and peri-urban households with practical skills like sack farming and composting.
  • Food for Persons with Disabilities (Food4PWDs): Enabled 110 PWDs to grow their own food and enhance nutrition and income.
  • Bio-Waste for Resilience: Converts organic waste into compost and biogas, promoting a circular economy and community resilience in Angwan Doka 2 in Karu
  • Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP): Facilitated land-use assessments in 114 communities across Kebbi, Borno, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara States under the IFAD-CASP project.

5. Policy Influencing and Governance

GIFSEP’s advocacy has contributed to shaping environmental governance and climate policy in Nigeria.

Key initiatives include:

  • Coal Free Nigeria Campaign: Research and advocacy that led to halting new coal licenses and protecting host communities like Owukpa community in Benue and Awoakpali community in Kogi.
  • Policy Advocacy: Supported the development and implementation of five climate policies in Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Benue States.
