REPower Afrika, REPower Nigeria: The Urgency of Climate Action in Africa

Africa, rich in resources and cultural heritage, finds itself at the epicenter of the climate crisis. From rising temperatures to unpredictable rainfall patterns, the consequences are magnified in Africa’s already vulnerable systems: its economies, infrastructure, agriculture, public health and food security. This stark disparity reveals an urgent need for action. Africa must adapt, not only to preserve the modest gains of recent development but to ensure a sustainable future for its people. The cost of inaction is simply too high.

In response to this growing crisis, GIFSEP joined 350 Africa in launching the REPower Afrika Campaign in Nigeria, a movement aimed at creating a pan-African shift toward renewable energy. At the core of this movement is a commitment to equity, ensuring that renewable energy access is available to all communities, particularly those hardest hit by climate change. The Solar Africa Campaign, a part of this larger effort, strives to connect regional renewable energy projects and advocate for increased investments from governments and financiers in affordable, clean energy.

The REPower Nigeria campaign became expedient as a world bank report showed that in 2023, 43% of Nigeria’s population (around 85 million people) lacked access to electricity, with rural areas most affected (25-30% access).  Despite vast renewable energy potential, renewable sources contribute minimally to Nigeria’s energy mix. Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan targets 30% renewable energy by 2030, focusing on solar and mini-grids.  Although Nigeria has 12.5 GW of installed generation capacity, only 3500-5000 MW is typically available.  The annual consumption of electricity per capita is among the lowest in Africa, estimated at less than 150 kWh. The lack of a reliable and affordable supply of electricity impacts every facet of life in Nigeria. Businesses routinely cite the cost of electricity as the principal drain on profitability and competitiveness. Schools and clinics often go without electricity or rely on costly diesel generators

Through advocacy and tangible action, GIFSEP implemented the REPower Nigeria campaign The march was not the only form of activism. In tandem with the street action, GIFSEP also mobilized digital activists to spread the message across social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

The vision behind REPower Afrika and REPower Nigeria is clear: renewable energy offers a pathway to a healthier planet and a more sustainable future. As the impacts of climate change continue to accelerate, the only viable solution lies in our collective ability to reduce emissions and transition to cleaner energy. If we can implement the right policies and embrace the potential of renewable energy, we are on the cusp of monumental change. But this is not a fight that can be won by activists alone. Every citizen, policymaker, and organization must take part. Together, we can make the difference the world needs.

Join us in this movement for a sustainable future!
