In Angwan Doka II in Karu LGA of Nasarawa State, GIFSEP’s partnership with UNDP GEF-SGP ignited a transformative journey, one that reframed waste not as a burden, but as a resource with the power to rebuild livelihoods and strengthen environmental stewardship. Throughout the year, the Waste-to-Wealth initiative brought community members together to explore practical, climate-smart solutions that protect the environment while opening doors to new sources of income.

The project began with a comprehensive baseline study that illuminated the scale of waste challenges in the area and highlighted the opportunities hidden within them. From there, GIFSEP convened an awareness and sensitization (radio talkshows and workshops) that deepened community understanding of climate change, sustainable waste management, and the shared responsibility of safeguarding local ecosystems.

Building on this foundation, we facilitated hands-on training sessions that introduced participants to organic manure production, sack farming techniques, and black soldier fly farming; practical methods that turn everyday waste into tools for food production and economic resilience. The establishment of a pilot urban farm served as a living demonstration site, showing how simple innovations can reshape food systems and empower households.

Through this initiative, community members gained not only new skills but a renewed sense of ownership over their environment. The Waste-to-Wealth project stands as a testament to what is possible when communities are equipped with knowledge, supported with resources, and inspired to lead the change they want to see.
