Environmental Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) Bill Campaign

Throughout the year, GIFSEP deepened its commitment to safeguarding communities and ecosystems by advancing the movement for a people centered Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) Bill. This ongoing campaign(online and offline) is rooted in justice, accountability, and public participation and sought to amplify voices often left out of environmental decision making and to push for laws that reflect the lived realities of communities impacted by extractive and industrial activities.

The journey unfolded not in boardrooms, but in streets, stakeholder dialogues, and media spaces where everyday Nigerians shared their hopes for a safer, fairer environment. In the course of this campaign, GIFSEP consistently called for speedy passage of the bill before the 10th National Assembly of Nigeria. We also advocated for stronger protections for Indigenous communities who disproportionately bear the brunt of environmental harm.

Through dialogues with stakeholders, press engagements, and sustained public awareness efforts, the campaign spotlighted the #ESHIA Bill as more than legislation, it is a tool for justice. A tool that ensures communities are consulted, environmental risks are genuinely assessed, and development decisions prioritize human lives and ecological balance over short term profit.

Our collective call remains clear; a just society is impossible without an ESHIA process that truly serves the public interest. And until that vision becomes reality, GIFSEP will continue to stand with communities, elevate their stories, and push for policies that honor both people and the environment.
