Empowering Women’s Voices for Renewable Energy

This year, GIFSEP deepened its commitment to gender-responsive climate action through the Empowering Women’s Voices for Renewable Energy in Nigeria initiative, a journey designed to place women at the centre of the country’s clean energy transition. The programme began with an inception meeting and an advocacy training that introduced participants to the principles of non-violent campaigning, community mobilization, and the power of collective voice. Women from across fossil-fuel-impacted communities in  Niger delta, Benue and Kogi explored practical strategies for building public support, gathering signatures for petitions, and influencing policy conversations through peaceful, organized action.

Building on this foundation, GIFSEP convened an intensive three-day bootcamp dedicated to strengthening women’s leadership in the renewable energy sector. The sessions opened space for dialogue on environmental injustices, the realities faced by communities living in the shadow of fossil fuel extraction, and the urgency of a just energy transition. Participants also received hands-on learning experiences in solar technology…gaining exposure to installation techniques, business development opportunities, and the emerging pathways for women to thrive as clean energy entrepreneurs and advocates.

The bootcamp culminated in an exhibition that showcased renewable energy innovations, alongside a media parley that elevated the women’s experiences and aspirations. Their stories resonated across press platforms, amplifying the message that women are not only victims of climate impacts, they are innovators and leaders steering Nigeria toward a sustainable future.

To sustain the momentum, GIFSEP launched a social media series spotlighting Women in Renewable Energy champions, creating a vibrant digital space where their voices, expertise, and lived realities could be seen and heard. This online engagement evolved into a wider advocacy campaign calling for increased investment in renewable energy, driven by the conviction that Nigeria’s energy future must reflect the leadership and resilience of its women.

Through every stage of this initiative, GIFSEP nurtured a growing movement of women who are shaping conversations, influencing policy, and transforming their communities through renewable energy solutions. Their leadership signals a powerful truth: when women rise, the transition to a cleaner and fairer energy system becomes not just possible but unstoppable.
