Developing a Climate Change Policy for Bauchi State: A Collaborative Pathway to Resilience

The effectiveness of government policies hinges on their alignment with local contexts and priorities. This principle is especially critical in the realm of climate change policy. Recognising this, we have embarked on a collaborative effort to support the Bauchi State Government in developing a comprehensive State Climate Change Policy. This initiative, funded by Oxfam, seeks to address the state’s unique climate challenges through localised and inclusive strategies.

Bauchi State, spanning the Sudan and Sahel savannah regions of Nigeria, faces distinct climate-related challenges. From erratic rainfall patterns to increasing desertification and the vulnerability of agricultural systems, these issues bring to fore the need for a tailored approach to climate governance. A domesticated climate change policy is essential to effectively address these challenges and safeguard the livelihoods of its people.

In light of this, a stakeholders’ dialogue on climate change policy for the state was held on December 12 and 13, 2024 in Bauchi, marking an important step in the policy development process. This event brought together a diverse array of participants, including representatives from government ministries and agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), communities, women and youth groups, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and the media.

The dialogue provided a platform to delve into the complexities of climate change within the state, examine creative local solutions, and outline practical steps for transformation. The discussions were filled with valuable insights and recommendations aimed at tackling the state’s vulnerabilities while promoting resilience and adaptation. The meeting culminated in a communiqué that was released to serve as a foundation for the policy development.

With strong political will and an institutional framework in place, Bauchi State is poised to tackle its climate challenges head-on and the collaborative approach adopted in developing the State Climate Change Policy will not only ensure inclusivity but also enhance the likelihood of successful implementation.
