Meet Dorcas Nicanor – From Volunteer to Staff

Q1. How did your journey with GIFSEP begin?
ANS: “It was in 2021 during my NYSC service year that I first learned about GIFSEP through a family member and it piqued my interest. There I was more than half way through my service year and thinking of what I’d do after service, then I decided that instead of aimlessly job hunting, why not volunteer while searching for other opportunities. Having previously volunteered with a non-governmental organization, I knew the value one could get through volunteering so I applied and was given the opportunity with GIFSEP. Volunteering with GIFSEP presented an opportunity to not only serve but also to equip myself with new knowledge and skills. I had very limited knowledge about environmental and climate issues and the development sector as a whole so I was very excited to start a new journey of growth personally and professionally”.
Q2. What led to your transition from volunteer to staff?
Ans: “During my time as a volunteer, I was actively involved in organizing events, making presentations, writing reports and delivering on tasks given to me. Overtime I took on more responsibilities as assigned, I believe my commitment did not go unnoticed so when a vacancy opened for a staff position, I was encouraged to apply”.
Q3. What’s your current role at GIFSEP?
Ans: “I currently serve as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at GIFSEP. My role involves tracking the progress of our climate action projects to ensure that our activities are being carried out effectively in line with expected outputs and outcomes, and ensuring we meet our goals and impact targets. It’s a role that allows me to measure not just numbers, but real-life change and continuously improve our impact on the communities we serve”.
Q4: What advice do you have for aspiring volunteers?
Ans: “Start where you are, and don’t wait to have all the answers. Volunteering gives you a space to learn on the job, grow, and connect with purpose-driven people. Be consistent, show up with curiosity, and don’t be afraid to take initiative. Every task, no matter how small, contributes to something bigger”.
We are truly inspired by Dorcas, an individual who started her journeys as volunteers and continue to contribute meaningfully to climate change and community development. Her stories reflect the heart of what GIFSEP stands for; empowering people to take action, learn, relearn, grow and make lasting impact. Whether in the field or behind the scenes, volunteers like her remind us that change is possible when passion meets purpose.
