At GIFSEP, real change starts from the grassroots. In this edition, we shine a light on #SolarForCommunity. A shining example of how environmental education and renewable energy access can transform lives. In the quiet hills of Owukpa, a rural community in Ogbadibo LGA of Benue State. Light now shines literally and figuratively, thanks to GIFSEP’s #Solar4Communities initiative.

For years, Owukpa has struggled with environmental and health impacts of coal mining, which has not only degraded farmlands and polluted water sources but also disrupted the livelihoods of many residents. With limited access to electricity and growing economic hardship, the need for sustainable solutions became urgent.
In 2021, over 70 households in the community were powered with solar home systems, bringing clean, reliable energy to families for the first time. But the impact extended beyond just light, it brought hope.
“ I no longer have to use torch light or walk in the dark when I want to ease myself,” shared one elderly resident.
The Solar4Community initiative is part of GIFSEP’s broader effort to promote climate justice, renewable energy access and community empowerment in frontline communities; And for Owukpa, it marked a new chapter. One where clean energy helps restore dignity and resilience in a place once defined by environmental exploitation.
GIFSEP still remains committed to expanding this impact across other affected grassroot communities in Nigeria, proving that with the right support, every community can rise.
